Schuylerville Central School District residents passed a $38.4 million budget for the 2023-24 school year by a vote of 515 to 102 on Tuesday, May 16, a margin of 83%. The approved budget carries a 0.63% spending decrease and an estimated tax levy increase of 1.98%. Tax rates for individual properties will be determined over the summer once equalization rates and assessments are available for the district’s seven towns.
“On behalf of the Board of Education and administration, I’d like to thank the community for their support,” said Superintendent Gregg Barthelmas. “The 2023-24 budget is one that maintains the district’s strong level of academic opportunities for all students, with a focus on mental health prioritization. It is our goal to present taxpayers with a fair and balanced budget. Schuylerville CSD has always been known for its high-quality education and the passage of this budget continues to preserve that for our students.”
“The budget decrease and tax levy increase will be a one-year anomaly as we bridge the gap from the 2022-23 to the 2023-24,” added Assistant Superintendent for Business Christine Burke. “This is a method for the school district to improve fiscal management and reestablish a healthy budget that will carry year-to-year. We are thankful for the community’s support.”
Board of Education Election
Voters elected three members to the Schuylerville CSD Board of Education:
- Two, five-year terms beginning July 1, 2023:
- The seats will be held by Jamie Martin, who received 514 votes, and Michele Renner who received 426 votes.
- One, one-year term beginning May 17, 2023 through June 30, 2024:
- The seat will be held by Shaun Cumm, who received 320 votes.
Schuylerville Public Library
In the Schuylerville Public Library Board of Trustees election, voters elected two candidates. The two candidates who received the highest number of votes, Amy Carpenter (500 votes) and Catherine Veltum (443 votes), will each fill a three-year term ending in 2026. This year, the library did not propose a tax levy increase, so the total appropriation will remain $365,000.
