On Monday, April 8th, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. New York will be one of eleven states situated within the path of totality for the total solar eclipse. Several regions of the state will be in the direct path of totality, while other regions will be able to view a partial solar eclipse.
The eclipse will begin at about 2:00 p.m. on April 8th with peak time in our area at approximately 3:28 p.m. which also overlaps with school dismissal. While this is a unique educational opportunity, it also presents a safety issue, requiring specialized eye protection for solar viewing. The following early dismissal plan will be put into place for Monday, April 8th, with the goal of having the majority of students off campus by the peak time of the eclipse. This prioritizes the safety of our bus drivers, student drivers, staff, and families who will be driving during this time.
Early dismissal
- The high school and middle school (grades 6-12) will dismiss at the end of 8th period: 1:41 p.m.
- UPK will dismiss at 2:00 p.m.
- The elementary school (grades K-5) will dismiss at 2:25 p.m.
- Athletic practices on campus will be held inside until 5:00 p.m. and then will resume outside
- After-school care will be held as normal, inside
- Education-related absences for students whose families report they are going to watch the eclipse will be allowed.
