District appoints Dr. Ryan Sherman as Acting Superintendent

The Schuylerville Board of Education would like to provide an update regarding the Schuylerville Central School District’s superintendency, and a transition of interim leadership that will begin Thursday, May 30.

The Board approved a leave of absence for personal reasons requested by Superintendent Gregg Barthelmas that began on February 26, 2024. At that time, James Ducharme was appointed as Acting Superintendent, while Nate Kocak and Todd Gonyeau served as co-Principals for Schuylerville High School.

When the current administrative structure was put in place in February, it was intended to be temporary for the term of Mr. Barthelmas’ requested personal leave. However, on May 6, the Board approved a resolution placing Mr. Barthelmas on paid administrative leave, requiring a long term administrative plan.  As a result, during a special meeting on May 29, the Board appointed Dr. Ryan Sherman as Acting Superintendent, effective Thursday, May 30. Dr. Sherman served as superintendent of the Schuylerville Central School District from 2009-2021. Previously, he was the superintendent of schools for the Argyle Central School District, as well as Argyle’s Junior-Senior High School principal. Dr. Sherman’s extensive administrative experience will be an asset to Schuylerville as he serves as Acting Superintendent.

On Thursday, May 30, Mr. Ducharme will return to his role as High School Principal and Mr. Kocak will return to his role as Assistant High School Principal. Mr. Gonyeau’s last day at the high school will be Thursday, May 30.

The Board of Education would like to thank Mr. Kocak and Mr. Gonyeau for their leadership in the high school building during the past three months. In addition, the Board would like to extend its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Ducharme for assuming the district’s superintendent responsibilities during an extremely challenging time. We thank him for his steady leadership, effective communication, collaboration, and perseverance. As he returns to his role as High School Principal, Mr. Ducharme will focus on the important last month of activities for the building, as well as the Class of 2024’s upcoming commencement ceremony.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the school community for their patience and support, and wish all district families an excellent conclusion to the school year.
